The first job at hand is to remove the shear bolts, holding the housing in place. This job is not for the faint hearted and requires experience.
Shear bolts hold the ignition steering lock housing firmly in place on the Volkswagen Golf. These need to be removed to repair a failed ignition barrel – lock housing.
Once the steering lock housing is removed from the steering column, the Volkswagen Golf ignition barrel can be removed from the housing. Sometimes the Golf ignition barrels will release from the housing with a bit of encouragement and technique. Sometimes if heavily worn, it is necessary to cut the failed steering lock housing through a cross section, in order to release the ignition barrel. The original ignition barrel can usually be re-used and placed into a new, replacement steering lock housing, along with the original ignition switch.
