Procedures
Replacing Lost Car Keys
The following procedures apply for an ‘all car keys lost’ situation where replacement car keys are required. Procedures differ between manufacturer, model and year of the vehicle and these are general notes. Please note that with replacement car keys on some vehicle models such as Ford keys, it is necessary to program a minimum of 2 keys before the immobiliser disarms and the security system will allow the vehicle to start.

need a car or van key?
- Replacement Keys for Lost Car or Van Keys – it may be possible for us to attain the key code for your vehicle, cut the car key and set the correct transponder ID to matching your vehicle’s immobiliser – prior to arriving at the vehicle with replacement car keys. At this point techniques are used to access the immobiliser and program the new keys into the vehicle. Often a pin code is required
*Please note that if locks have been changed on the vehicle at any point in the past, manufacturer key codes will only fit the original lock of the vehicle and may not work. This results in extra time/cost. - Often an Immobiliser Pin Code – is required to access the ability to write new key data to your vehicle to replace lost keys. Once keys are cut and access has been gained to the vehicle, the pin code can often be attained from the vehicle using the correct programming tools, or again, sometimes we can buy this code at the same time a key blade number is ordered.
- Key Code Cards –
- Lock Picking and Decoding – If there is no key code available or the locks have been changed on the vehicle, the door lock will need to be picked and decoded in order to determine the key code for a new key. The key can be cut on-site from the decoded bittings of the decoded lock, to work with the vehicle’s locks and ignition. If either the door lock or ignition barrel has been changed and therefore, do not match, the two locks will need to be picked and decoded independently. In these cases two sets of replacement car keys are needed for the ignition barrel and door lock.
- Central Locking and Remote Programming on Replaced Car Keys – Sometimes the remote/central locking will program in sync with the transponder and sometimes it is a separate process for the remotes to work.
- Accessing Vehicles With Broken Door Locks – If you have lost car keys for a vehicle with a seized or non-functional door lock which cannot be freed up, the vehicle will need to be accessed by using airbags and rods to access the vehicle interior and actuate a door handle, to open the vehicle. If the interior handles are dead-locked, it may be necessary to drill out the door lock to open the vehicle. The ignition barrel will need to be picked, or removed and disassembled to access the key code. Sometimes, the door lock can be removed to access either the key code on the barrel or by disassembling the lock to access the internal settings of the wafers or tumblers, to cut the key.
- In cases of lost car keys where the immobiliser cannot be accessed and the keys cannot be programmed via OBD, it may be possible to carry out EEPROM work, by removing the immobiliser circuit board and working directly onto the immobiliser chip. This adds time and cost to the process.
Transponder operation is usually handled by the immobiliser system on a vehicle whilst the remote and central locking functions are handled by the BCM (Body Control Module) or equivalent manufacturer module. It is a common fault – particularly with older vehicles, that a key transponder will start the vehicle but remote/central locking functions will not operate due to faults within the BCM, wiring loom, fuses or other failed components. We can diagnose these issues on-site. Additional fees apply.
