BMW X3 Car Key Provided For a Customer in SO32 Hampshire
A call was received from a customer with a tidy BMW X3, whom had 2 keys and needed assistance. One key had stopped working completely, and the other key was on the way out.
The customer was visited quickly on the same day. Following a test of both keys, it was clear that a replacement BMW X3 car key was required. The original keys being rather worn out.
The BMW key was an all in one, non flip car key with a remote. The car was an E83 X3 model, using the EWS4 immobiliser.

Programming EWS4 keys requires EEPROM programming. This involves removing the immobiliser and removing the circuit board from the plastic casing. The circuit board is placed into a purpose made clamp and connected to a laptop with software capable of reading and writing BMW immobiliser data.

Next, the immobiliser data is read from the module and the data is saved. Using a fresh key, the data is written to the new key, enabling it to start the vehicle. the EWS4 module is replaced back into the vehicle, and the trim replaced into position. The key can now be tested in the door lock and ignition. In this case, the key worked and started the vehicle.

A manual procedure is required to program a remote into BMW EWS4 – they cannot be programmed diagnostically. Again, in this case this procedure worked correctly, and the vehicle locked and unlocked with the remote. Operation of the original key was checked, and the BMW X3 customer had a new car key, with a working remote.
