Key Won’t Turn in The Ignition – Portsmouth, PO4, Hampshire

Transit Mk7 Ignition Barrel Replacement in PO4

A stranded Ford Transit MK7 was attended to at the Halfords Auto Centre, in Rodney Road PO4, Portsmouth, with a failed ignition barrel. The key would only half turn towards position 1 in the ignition. These vans use the older tibbe style key, door lock and barrel. The ignition barrels and the keys are subject to very heavy wear with repeated use. This particular ignition barrel was very heavily worn. The keys also showed signs of heavy wear and were almost flat profiles.

I NEED HELP WITH MY IGNITION BARREL

After an extended effort to free the barrel, to turn it to position 1 in order to extract the locking pin, it became apparent that this Ford Transit ignition barrel required more drastic action. It would not turn to position 1 despite much effort to persuade it to do so. It needed to be drilled out. This took quite some time and care has to be taken, to avoid damaging the housing. The housing retains the ignition barrel in position, so that it can turn the mechanism and the ignition switch, on the back of the housing.

Once the original barrel had been drill out, the housing was thoroughly cleaned to remove all the resulting swarf.

Fitting the New Ford MK7 Transit Ignition Barrel

Once the housing was cleaned and clear of debris, the replacement ignition barrel was fitted to the transit. This was test thoroughly for operation before replacement the ignition key reader and trim. The new ignition barrel had a new key profile, so the customer was provided with 2 replacement key blades for his existing keys. The vehicle started straight away and the customer was on his way.
