A message was received during late evening on a weekend, from a Citroen C1 customer whom needed a replacement remote car key. A visit was arranged to Copner, PO3 in Portsmouth for the following Monday morning to provide a new car key.

Many of the Citroen C1 vehicles when purchased new are provided with a single remote key and a standard transponder key (non remote). This customer had lost her only remote key, meaning she had a single key but no remote function to operate the central locking.

Since the remaining and original Citroen C1 key was quite worn, I elected to duplicate the worn key profile. The alternative to this is to decode the key and cut a fresh – as per original blade. However, this may not have worked in the locks very well. Keys and locks wear in unison and so cutting a worn profile is often the wise path, if possible. The duplicated key blade worked perfectly. Both the door lock and ignition worked fine.

Next, a Citroen C1 transponder was prepared and programmed to match the vehicle’s immobiliser, enabling the car to start.

Citroen C1 Remote Key Programming

The key blade was fitted into a universal, programmable remote key head. The transponder was fitted to the case and a manual procedure was used to program the remote function to the vehicle.

Programming the Citroen C1 remote function is often referred to as ‘the chicken dance’. It involves a complex sequence of opening and closing the drivers door and turning the ignition on and off. The procedure is finalised by operating the remote buttons.

Everything worked fine and the original key was tested. Happy customer.
